Andrea Vink – Operations Manager

I started working for iSECURE (VocalNet) in January 2010.  At the time, I was hired to do the accounting for the business.  VocalNet offered services such as Dial-Up (yes Dial-Up), internet, web hosting, VOIP etc. At the time we were just getting our feet wet with this thing called Internet Security.  All of which kept me very busy.

Annette Warren, our president and her husband John, saw that IT security was a growing need in every market. They wanted to dedicate 100% of their focus to it, and started the process of selling the other parts of their business off.  So as one would imagine, I started to get really nervous. The workload dwindled as the shift began. So much so that I had to ask myself “Is there enough business to justify my position?” My previous job had done a series of layoffs which included myself and my husband. So, as fun as that was the first time around, I really didn’t want to get back on that roller coaster. I was finally working for a company I really enjoyed and felt like the work I did was integral to its success.  You have to find what works for you; and what I found is that I really enjoy the small company atmosphere.  I finally had a boss that was super approachable (which can be a rare find), I had a place where I could share my ideas both good and bad, and have some fun too! I really believe/believed in the iSECURE story that was being created and I wanted to be a part of it.

One of the main reasons I believe in the iSECURE story is because technology touches every aspect of our lives life these days. From how we communicate, drive, receive medical attention and obviously conduct business, it’s everywhere. It’s also an ideal space for modern-day crimes; and who wouldn’t want to be a part of stopping the bad guys?  I knew iSECURE would take off and do great things and I wanted to stick around somehow in some capacity. I approached Annette before that inevitable layoff conversation and proposed how I could justify my staying.

“Keep me on a few hours a week to maintain the iSECURE accounting and I will go get a 2nd (and then 3rd) job to supplement my income. I know we will grow, and then I will come back full time”.  A normal person would have said I am going to go on unemployment, spend some time with my new baby and take my time finding a full time job…I am not normal I guess.

It took about nine months of the company being completely focused on IT Security for me to come back full-time.  Six-and-a-half-years later, and I am now the Operations Manager at iSECURE. I work with every department in the company which requires me to wear many different hats.  I have seen a lot of people come and go but there is a small group of us that have been here since the idea of iSECURE, one amazing highlight is coming up with the name, the concept, tagline, and then seeing the growth thereafter.  I feel as though not many of people get to say that in their careers. I believe that much of our success can be linked to living our story. Our story is that we believe in earning the trust of our customers, which takes time.  It’s not a “Hey, you should buy this” Rather, our approach is “What are your needs, concerns, security goals and how can we work together to figure out the best fit?”

Lastly, and what separates us apart even more, is we believe in the power of education.  This is an ever changing industry and we have to keep educating ourselves and our customers.
